Welcome to the new season, 2015 to 2016. The club was founded as long ago as 1940 so we have to celebrate 75 years of live music at the Quaker Meeting House!
At a time when many music clubs are having difficulty surviving we are proud to announce a new program with our usual eclectic variety of music.
For a long time we have not had a wind quintet, so it is with such an ensemble that we start the season on September 20. I love the contrasting variety of the instruments -ranging from the smooth sound of the French horn via the fluttery flute, the cheeky oboe, the round sound of the clarinet and the ploddy bassoon.
French composers (Ibert, Francais) are well represented as they write extremely wittily for this group of instruments. This prompted me to arrange a piano piece, ‘Le Petit Negre’, by Debussy, which New British Winds are very kindly going to premiere of at the end of their concert.
On October 18 we present our first piano recital by the young Luka Okros from Georgia. He is currently acquiring a number of prizes for his superb playing and we have the Tillet trust to thank for a contribution towards his fees. His playing of music by Chopin and Schumann is surely a treat we can look forward to. Make sure you bring along friends and family of (almost)any age who can appreciate brilliant piano playing.
We return to jazz for our November 15 concert. Sarah Brown has a remarkable soprano voice which embraces many styles. On her ‘journey through jazz’ she will be accompanied by Chris Eldred (piano)and Loz Garratt (bass). I am particularly delighted to welcome Chris as he has excelled as a jazz pianist and is a member of the Hertford musical community, having played the piano solo in the Mass in Blue by Will Todd which the choral Society sang in summer 2014. He stunned us with his improvisations and he can often be heard at the local Jungle Bar.
I HOPE YOU AGREE THAT OUR MEMBERSHIP PRICING STILL REPRESENTS ASTOUNDINGLY GOOD VALUE – SIGN UP NOW ONLINE OR AT THE FIRST CONCERT.
I expect some of you will have visited the Prom concerts this summer. Do give me some feedback on your thoughts and any ideas for future concerts at the club – use the COMMENTS box below.
