Harold’s Autumn 2017 Letter

Hello all music lovers

Welcome to our new season of live classical music in the superb setting of the Quaker meeting house Hertford. I would like to present another sequence of concerts to resonate in the superb acoustic of this historic place.

September 17

HMC_concert_pic_2017_09_listingJon Banks & musicians present “Schubert through the Looking Glass” or simply “Schubert at the Pub”!

Some years ago this group treated us to an amazing combination of gypsy dance music that Brahms would have heard at the ZRI pub (The Red Squirrel!) and his emotionally charged clarinet quintet. Now it is Schubert’s turn. Thick snow had prevented many members attending with the Brahms concert nevertheless the Hall was packed. So to avoid disappointment, you are strongly advised to purchase tickets in advance.

October 15

HMC_concert_pic_2017_10_thumbI found this traditional   duo of violin played by Alexandra Lomeiko accompanied by Antonia Suhanova- two young players taking off rapidly in the world of classical music. They will treat us to a fine overview of the major classic composers during the last two centuries:

  • Beethoven: Sonata for violin and piano in E flat, op.12 no.3
  • Schubert : Grand Duo in A major for violin and piano, D.574
  • Debussy: Sonata for violin and piano in G major
  • Prokofiev: Sonata for violin and piano in D major, no.2 op.94

Alexandra was born in 1991 into a family of musicians. Based in London, United Kingdom, Alexandra has established herself as one of the most talented and versatile musicians her age, winning prizes in various competitions, founding and directing the unconducted ensemble Silk Street Sinfonia, being broadcast on BBC Radio 3 on numerous occasions and performing extensively as a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician both in the U.K and abroad.

We are greatly indebted to the Countess of Munster foundation for their generous support of this concert. It is often only through sponsorship that clubs such as our own can survive. Have you thought of making an extra donation in addition to your membership this year?

February 18

HMC_concert_pic_2018_02_listingJazz Piano & Double Bass. Andrei Pyatalue & Tom Pedersen

Andrei takes a break from his widespread and busy teaching practice to return to our club. His incredible pianism and knowledge of both classical and jazz repertoire form a recipe for non-stop intriguing extemporizing on classics from the American songbook–Gershwin, Cole Porter and others as well as his own material, sensitively and wittily supported by Tom his bassist of many years.

It might pay to buy tickets in advance for this popular item.
